Part 5 of 7
Online Resources to Discover and Learn about Office 365
Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams was launched in November 2016 as a new chat based workspace for ………Teams! It brings together people, conversations and content into an entirely new experience while using the tools they are already familiar with from within Office 365, enabling them to collaborate and achieve more. Proving that technology and productivity are continually being reinvented and whilst being little over a year old it is planned that Microsoft Teams will ultimately replace Skype for Business as the hub for Team conversations.
Microsoft Teams includes;
- Chat – persistent, threaded chats are available to the whole team, while there is the ability for private chats too. Skype for Business is deeply integrated for voice and video conferences and everyone can stamp their personality on their workspace with emojis, stickers, GIFs and custom memes to make it their own
- A hub for teamwork – the full sweep of Office 365, and Office 365 Groups is available to create a hub for teamwork. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneNote, Planner, Power BI and Delve are all built into Microsoft Teams so people have all the information and tools they need at their fingertips.
- Customisable for each team – any team is unique, so a lot has gone into making Teams Workspaces customisable, for example via Tabs to provide access to common or frequently used files and cloud services. Notifications and updates from other services like Twitter and GitHub are available and further integration is available to developers to extend Microsoft Teams.
- Security Teams can trust – Microsoft Teams will support key compliance standards. Data is encrypted throughout and is provisioned and managed centrally just as any other Office 365 service.

Microsoft Planner
Microsoft Planner is a new, simple, light-weight Work Management Application which enables teamwork to be chaos free! Microsoft Planner enables teams to create new plans, organise and assign tasks, share files, chat about work progress and challenges and get updates across the team. It is based on the use of Project Boards, tasks, and buckets.
Being new, it is still in development and missing some key features, but a key advantage is its integration with other Microsoft products , for example; Outlook, OneNote and SharePoint.
